( Details ) ISBN: 0060938455 Published: January 2002 | Published by Harper Collins From the Publisher Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That’s a lengthy list of charges, but here Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning. Schlosser’s myth-shattering survey stretches from California’s subdivisions where the business was born to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike where many fast food’s flavors are concocted. Along the way, he unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths -- from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate. He also uncovers the fast food chains’ disturbing efforts to reel in the youngest, most susceptible consumers even while they hone their institutionalized exploitation of teenagers and minorities. Review Quotes ôSuperb and wonderfully horrifying....ö San Francisco Gate Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 7 1. hard to put this book down Reviewer: janice from calgary, ab Date: 2/7/2003 4:26:48 PM This book is incredible!!! It is a very interesting and captivating read that I recommend everyone should take in. My families habits have changed forevermore!! 2. Enlightening Reviewer: amelie from montreal,QC Date: 11/2/2002 11:28:03 AM I had been eyeing this book for a while and finally decided to buy it out of pure curiosity. FAST FOOD NATION goes behind the counter and into the slaughter houses, farms, etc. As i was reading this book, i kept having to remind myself that all the information is recent, up to date. This isn't a book just about animal rights, it's about human rights, animal rights, and consumer rights. I recommend this book to vegetarians, meat eaters, the rich and the poor, business men and women, and especially parents. This is a great book, hard to read at times (due to graphic description and the life stories told by employees and farmers), but well worth it. 3. A must read! Reviewer: Isabella Pang from Kingston, ON (pangisabella@hotmail.com) Date: 10/3/2002 12:08:17 PM This book was excellent. It tells of all the bad things that fast food bring (aside from the obvious lack of nutritional value of most fast foods). Will never eat at McDonald's EVER again. 4. Fear your hamburger! Reviewer: Tito Sanchez from Toronto Date: 7/10/2002 11:20:02 PM Read how the meat super-powers are wagging war against your health and that of their workers. 5. Sickening Reviewer: sickem from Duncan BC Date: 7/6/2002 6:37:45 PM It grossed me out! and im not eating McDonalds food again! Read all of the reviews...
