"I am not sure quite why but this year my favourite fiction books have all been by first-time writers. When I first read the synopsis of this book – a young girl is raped and murdered by a serial killer – I said to myself, "This is not for me." Fortunately, I was on an airplane and this book was the only one in my briefcase. This tour de force is like nothing you would imagine. It is compelling, beautifully written and a page-turning mystery. After you read it you will want to recommend it to everyone. " From the Publisher When we first meet Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. As she looks down from this strange new place, she tells us, in the fresh and spirited voice of a fourteen-year-old girl, a tale that is both haunting and full of hope. In the weeks following her death, Susie watches life on Earth continuing without her -- her school friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her family holding out hope that she'll be found, her killer trying to cover his tracks. As months pass without leads, Susie sees her parents' marriage being contorted by loss, her sister hardening herself in an effort to stay strong, and her little brother trying to grasp the meaning of the word gone. And she explores the place called heaven. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets. There are counselors to help newcomers adjust and friends to room with. Everything she ever wanted appears as soon as she thinks of it-except the thing she most wants: to be back with the people she loved on Earth. With compassion, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie sees her loved ones pass through grief and begin to mend. Her father embarks on a risky quest to ensnare her killer. Her sister undertakes a feat of remarkable daring. And the boy Susie cared for moves on, only to find himself at the center of a miraculous event. The Lovely Bones is luminous and astonishing, a novel that builds out of grief the most hopeful of stories. In the hands of a brilliant new writer, this story of the worst thing a family can face is transformed into a suspenseful and even funny novel about love, memory, joy, heaven, and healing. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 25 1. Could Have Been Better..... Reviewer: Dawn Levesque from Calgary, AB Date: 2/20/2003 1:12:43 PM I really liked this book as it grabs you right at the beginning. The subject matter sounds really bad but she has written it in such a way that it isn't sensationalizing on the pain, suffering and ultimately, the death of a 14-year-old girl. It speaks more of feelings than of blood. I was very disappointed with the ending though. I found it left me hanging.... 2. the best ever Reviewer: tracey from red deer ab (tadames@hotmail.com) Date: 2/14/2003 10:14:26 PM this is the best book ever. it is so suspensful and exciting it took me a week to read it. i couldn't get enough of it. definitely a *****star book. read it if you're looking for a book that makes you want to read more!!! 3. Amazing!! Reviewer: Christine from Regina, SK Date: 2/14/2003 6:46:33 PM When I was first told about this book, I was warned that the ending was stupid. I was also told that this was a great read, and I should read it anyway. When I started to read this book, I could not put it down! It is written with such feeling, that you go through what the character goes through. The more you read, the more you get lost in the book. I will admit that the ending does take a weird turn, but I don't feel it takes anything away from the story line. I am going to tell everyone I know to read this book. This is by far one of the greatest books I have ever read. My sugesstion is DON'T wait until it goes on sale! You'll miss out. 4. Amazing, amazing story! Reviewer: Kathy Renee from St. John's, NL. Date: 1/31/2003 12:57:04 PM I received this book for Christmas and when I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It is an amazing read about a murdered girl's family and how they cope with her death and disappearance. 5. Piques Your Interest Reviewer: Lisa from Kingston Date: 1/27/2003 6:23:36 PM I'm at a loss to really know how to review this novel by Alice Sebold. It is, at times, sweet, sad, slow, disappointing and uplifting. It is a book that needs to be read. I received it for a Christmas present and I am glad to have to had a glimpse of Susie's life and the lives of her loved ones. Read all of the reviews... Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.
In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.
